Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders. Women are more likely to develop anxiety than men, but it is not clear why. There are many forms of anxiety disorder but the one thing they have in common is their impact on day-to-day activities.

Anxiety can affect your ability to concentrate, sleep and carry out ordinary tasks at work, home or school. People with anxiety disorders often feel compelled to avoid stressful situations and in extreme cases avoid going out altogether. Physical symptoms are common and include shortness of breath, a pounding heart and trembling hands.

The most common anxiety disorders are:

Generalised anxiety disorder

(GAD) involves chronic and constant excessive worry and anticipation of disaster in every area of life. Symptoms include insomnia, headaches, sweatiness, fatigue, trembling, hot flushes and difficulty swallowing.

Social phobia

involves overwhelming anxiety and self-consciousness in ordinary social situations. Sufferers are so nervous and fearful of being judged by others and are so embarrassed by themselves that the condition affects work, school and friendships. Symptoms include trembling, nausea, blushing and sweating.

Panic disorder

Involves repeated and sudden panic attacks characterised by pounding heart, weakness, dizziness, tingling, chest pain, nausea, choking, terror, fear of loss of control and impending doom.

Obsessive compulsive disorder

(OCD) involves anxious thoughts and rituals that control the sufferer’s life and compel them to stave off disaster through acting out certain behaviours according to specific rules. It takes many different forms, but the feelings of intense anxiety and the need to act out rituals to relieve the anxiety are common to each.

Post-traumatic stress disorder

(PTSD) can develop after terrifying events such as violent attacks, natural disasters, accidents and experience of war. The symptoms include persistent frightening thoughts and memories of the ordeal, sleep problems and traumatic nightmares, emotional numbness, loss of interest and motivation, and even aggression and violence.

Specific phobias

are irrational and extreme fears of a thing that is actually little or no danger, which lead the sufferer to go to extreme lengths to avoid the object of fear. Some examples are fear of flying, tunnels, water, dogs, spiders, heights, rodents, blood.

Depression & Anxiety Therapy

When you come to Villa Paradiso for treatment of your depression, our assessment team will perform a complete evaluation to gain further information about your symptoms so that we can determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

While people who suffer from depression share certain symptoms, depression has numerous causes, co-occurring disorders, and effects, so each person’s experience of the illness is unique. Depression is a complex disorder which, if left untreated, can cause great suffering. Often, doctors and mental health professionals recommend residential rehab like Villa Paradiso so you have the opportunity to address your difficulties.

We provide a safe environment for you to explore painful topics and deal with challenges depression has caused in your life. Our therapists are trained to deal with a multitude of problems and can help address your emotional pain.

Types of Treatment Offered at Villa Paradiso

There are a number of treatment options for clients struggling with depression and/or co-occurring disorders. Each client admitted to our residential rehab centre will undergo a number of assessments in order to make certain our treatment team understands how best to treat you.

The medical examination will determine if you are struggling with medical complications while our psychiatric evaluation will diagnose any co-occurring disorders. Your Therapist will take the results of these assessments and work with you and your loved ones to create a plan of care for your stay with us.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay to reduce anxiety and other symptoms. Some clients are able to be weaned off their medication as they learn more adaptive coping mechanisms. However, many of our clients who have depression may take antidepressants for the long-term to keep symptoms at bay. Medication usage will be closely monitored by your allocated therapist and adjusted as needed.

Individual therapy is provided to address personal issues related to your depression and identify links between the depression and other co-occurring disorders. Our therapists use cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) which addresses errors or distortions in thinking, helping the person to challenge such thoughts and replace them with more adaptive ways of evaluating their world.

Group therapy is a common type of therapy we use at our rehab centre as it allows our clients to bond, work together to solve problems, and process difficult emotions. You’ll experience a number of types of group therapy. Process groups discuss issues related to a common theme or

Co-occurring problems such as trauma, substance abuse, or suicide attempts. Our skills-based groups focus upon topics like new coping strategies, re-entering social situations, risks for triggering depression, strategies related to dealing with co-occurring conditions, and relapse prevention.

Family therapy is an important aspect of depression treatment at Villa Paradiso, as our clients are part of larger systems of loved ones, family, and friends who need to be included in the healing process. During family sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to work with your loved ones to teach them about depression, the treatments, and the progress you’ve made. We’ll also allow your loved ones the chance to discuss ways in which your depression has impacted their lives.

Villa Paradiso offers a variety of experiential methods designed to complement traditional therapies. These therapeutic methods may include the following:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Breathwork
  • Adventure therapy
  • Massage
  • Bodywork
  • Art therapy
  • Equine therapy
  • Exercise

Bipolar Disorders & Depression

People with alcoholism are six times more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder than the general population, and almost four times more likely to have a major depressive disorder. When there is a dual diagnosis of alcoholism occurring together with another psychiatric condition, this is called comorbidity or dual disorder. The alcoholism (or other addictive illness) often makes diagnosis and treatment of the second psychiatric illness more difficult, because the behaviours and symptoms of alcoholism mask the symptoms of the other illness, and also prevent the client seeking help.

Bipolar disorder, formerly manic depression, is described as a mood disorder because it severely affects an individual’s emotional responses. Moods swing from high to low, from one pole to another – sometimes in a very short period of time, sometimes over days or weeks – but when it does happen it’s always severe.

There is also substance-induced mood disorder, which is brought on by the physiological effects of a substance, e.g. cocaine, ecstasy or prescribed medication.

These disorders can be difficult to detect, especially in the early stages. The main points to look out for are:

The highs – Mania

Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity – feeling on top of the world, imagined special connections with people in high places or powerful positions, imagine others think very highly of you

Decreased need for sleep – going to bed late and rising very early, surviving on little sleep but still feeling refreshed

The pressure of speech – hurrying, inability to get the words out in time, difficult to interrupt, usually loud and emphatic, continuing to talk even when no one is listening

Flight of ideas – accelerated speech, thinking of one thing than another, speech becoming incoherent

Distractibility – moving from one project to the next, can’t sustain attention, easily distracted

Psychotic episodes – paranoia, imaginary friends, delusions, hallucinations, impairment of ordinary everyday activities

Increased involvement in goal-oriented activities – workaholism, obsessive behaviour

Psychomotor agitation – cannot sit still, fidgeting, pacing around, inner tension

Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with a high potential for painful consequences – substance abuse, sexual acting out (several partners in a short period of time), excessive gambling and spending sprees

The lows – Depression

What goes up must eventually go down, so on the other end of the bipolar scale, the mania will usually at some stage switch into a major depressive episode. Your depression may last for months, weeks or only a few days before your return to mania or hypomania.

A major depressive disorder is a major depression only, without the mania. If you feel you’re suffering from depression only, then the symptoms listed below will also act as a guide. Dysthymia is a milder form of depression, more subtle than a major depressive disorder, and therefore not easy to recognise. Dysthymia doesn’t attract as much sympathy from family and friends because it appears as if sufferers are just feeling sorry for themselves. But it’s a diagnosable condition in itself and needs treating.

Signs of the depressive disorder include:

  • Strong, consistent feelings of sadness
  • Change in normal appetite leading to weight loss or gain
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Helplessness
  • Lack of energy
  • Negative thinking
  • Low sex drive
  • Loss of normal sleep pattern
  • Hopelessness
  • Crying
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Suicidal thoughts and planning

To meet the criteria for bipolar disorders, most of the high and low symptoms must be persistent and continuous over a sustained period of time (or less if you have needed to be hospitalised).

If you do have any of the symptoms listed – or if you think a family member or friend is suffering – it doesn’t necessarily mean that you or they are suffering from bipolar disorder. There could be many reasons for some of those highs and lows. If you have recently been detoxed for alcohol or drug dependency, you may still be in the early stages of recovery, and mood swings are normal at this stage. If, however, you’ve been in recovery from addiction for several months, and recognise some of these symptoms described, you may have a dual disorder. Getting a diagnosis for a secondary condition will not interfere with your twelve-step recovery – in fact, you may be in danger of relapse if this goes untreated.

Another cause of highs and lows could be that you’re suffering from another type of mood disorder. Or you may have been feeling on a natural high due to something going well at work or in your relationship, and then that has come to an end, and you now feel really low and down.
